Industrial Design & HFE

Phil has 30 years of new product development experience in consumer, commercial and medical device markets.  Prior to joining AcceLINX in 2018, he spent 8 years in Warsaw Indiana heading up the Industrial Design + Human Factors (ID+HF) group for DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction and Power Tools.  While at Johnson & Johnson, Phil chaired the Global Orthopedics ID+HF Community of Practice which included human-centered designers from DePuy Synthes’ Trauma, Spine and Sports Medicine businesses.  Before serving in that role, he held leadership positions within Motorola and Whirlpool’s global consumer design studios where he delivered numerous ‘WOW-factor’ products such as Motorola’s first metal flip phone.

Phil’s transition from consumer to medical device design in 2010 inspired a novel human-centered approach that blends the art and emotion of industrial design with the science and rigor of human factors engineering.  This design philosophy is most evident in the Attune Knee Instrumentation System which was recognized with a Silver Medical Design Excellence Award for its visually engaging, ergonomic and intuitive to use design.

Phil’s educational background includes a BFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an MBA from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Business.  Phil holds over 45 design and utility patents in the consumer electronics, home white goods and medical devices industries.
